General John Douglas military papers, 1775-1782.

ArchivalResource

General John Douglas military papers, 1775-1782.

Douglas was a Colonel and then a Brigadier General in the Connecticut militia during the Revolution. His military papers include orders and correspondence from Governor Jonathan Trumbull, updates on troop movements, government proclamations, and Douglas' own orders and an address to his men. A number of the letters from Trumbull indicate the need to and the difficulty of raising troops to defend Connecticut and Rhode Island. Two letters to Douglas concern British prisoners and their servant, whom Douglas was to protect. One of Douglas' orders was issued by General Israel Putnam. Of particular interest is a poem entitled "Burgoyne's most Bombasting and Gasconading Proclamation, sent down from Canada -- versified and completely redirected."
